I did wonder if you might not have been thinking of Livy rather than Virgil (as both of them deal with the subject of the founding of Rome), since Livy's idea of history was somewhat removed from the more modern notion of scrupulous fidelity to sources (which should not be read as suggesting that all modern historians are invaribaly clinical and objective in their judgements).
